Tricount alternative for group trips: how Trip Split compares

Both split a trip’s costs between friends who join from a link, and both can be used offline. Tricount is the established, free choice. Trip Split adds typed, spoken and photographed entry, converts cash at your own average rate, and charges 10 USD per trip. If you want free and simple, Tricount is a good answer; if you want those extras, try Trip Split.

Disclosure: this guide is by the makers of Trip Split. What we say about Tricount comes from its public pages and from sources we found, and is marked where it is second-hand. We have not tested every part of Tricount, and it changes, so check its website before deciding. If we got something wrong, tell us.

When Tricount is the better pick

If you want something free, long-established and available as a native app, Tricount is a good answer. If your trip has one currency and simple shares, you may not need anything more.

When Trip Split fits

If you want to record an expense with a sentence, your voice or a photo, if you pay in a mix of cash and cards abroad and want each converted by the rate that really applies, or if you prefer paying once per trip over a subscription, Trip Split is built for that. It is a new product from a small team, with fewer users and less track record than Tricount, there is no native app, and a trip has a limit of ten people.

Try both

Setting up a trip in either takes a few minutes. If you cannot decide, try the one that suits your group’s currencies and payment habits. For a wider look at the options, see the best expense-splitting apps for group trips and our comparison with Splitwise and Tricount.

Common questions

Is Tricount or Trip Split better for a group trip?

Tricount is a long-established free choice for simple trip splitting. Trip Split is newer and adds typed, spoken and photographed entry, cash converted at your own rate, and a per-trip price. Which is better depends on what you value.

Do I need an account to join in either?

According to the sources we found, friends can join a Tricount from a link without creating an account. In Trip Split friends join with a link and no account. Check Tricount’s website for its current rule.

Which one works offline?

Both are described as working offline. Tricount lets you add expenses offline and syncs later, though currency conversion needs a connection. Trip Split saves everything on your phone first.

Is Trip Split free?

It is free to start: manual entry, balances and settling up are free without limit. Unlimited quick notes, the share link, CSV export and bill emails cost 10 USD once per trip.
