Privacy policy
Trip Split splits the cost of a trip between friends. We collect only what that needs. There are no ads and we do not sell your data.
What we collect
- What you enter: the trip's name, dates and currency; the names of the people on the trip (whatever you type, which may be real names or nicknames); expenses, exchanges and the notes on them; and the text of quick notes you type to have an expense drafted.
- Phone keys and codes: your phone makes a random key that proves it belongs to a trip, and a recovery code that gets you back into your name on a new phone. We keep only one-way fingerprints (hashes) of these, so we cannot read them back.
- Payment: when you unlock a trip, Stripe takes the payment. We receive confirmation that a trip was paid and a payment reference. We never see your card number.
- Sign-in with Google (for the person who pays): when you unlock a trip you sign in with Google. We receive your Google account identifier and email address, so a payment can be matched to a person for support and refunds. We do not receive your Google password and do not read your Google data. Anyone can also link a Google account to their name on a trip. Signing in with Google on the home screen of a new phone then brings back every trip where that account is linked.
- Technical data: our hosting provider, Cloudflare, sees your internet address and device details when you use the site, as any host does. To tell people from bots, Cloudflare Turnstile may run a short check in your browser when a trip is created. We also keep short-lived counters of wrong code guesses, which include your internet address, for under a day, to stop people guessing codes.
We do not use advertising or tracking cookies. The app keeps your trips in your phone's browser storage so it works offline.
How we use it
- To run the trip: show everyone the expenses, work out balances and who pays whom, and keep phones in sync.
- To draft an expense from a quick note you typed. The text of the note and the trip's member names (so it can match who paid and who shared) are sent to a language-model provider, currently Google (Gemini), which returns a draft. Nothing is added to your trip until you confirm it.
- To take payment, prevent abuse, and answer support requests.
Who can see what
- Everyone who has joined a trip can see its shared expenses and the names of the other people in it.
- An expense marked "only me" is shared with nobody else. It is stored on our servers so you can get it back on a new phone, but only your own phones can read it.
- Anyone with the invite code can see the trip's name, dates and the list of names while the invite is open. They cannot take a name that is already taken without its recovery code.
- If you make a share link for the final bill, anyone with the link can read the bill (not personal expenses) until you make a new link.
Who we share it with
Only the services that run Trip Split: Cloudflare (hosting, database and file storage), Stripe (payments), Google (sign-in and the language model that drafts expenses), and an exchange-rate data provider (we send no personal data to it). We may disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Free trips are deleted two years after they end. Paid trips are kept until you ask us to delete them. Details are on the data retention page.
Your choices
You can ask us to show, correct or delete your data, or a whole trip, using the contact address below. Because a trip belongs to everyone in it, deleting a trip removes it for all of them. You can also clear the site's data in your browser to remove the copy on your phone.
Children
Trip Split is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date at the bottom and tell people in the app.
