A short list of transfers

  • Ben pays Ana 28.00 USD
  • Ben pays Cleo 10.00 USD

How it works

  1. Add the names of everyone in the group.
  2. For each expense, enter the amount, who paid, and tick the people who shared it.
  3. For each person the calculator adds up what they paid and subtracts their shares, which gives one balance. A positive balance means they are owed money, a negative one that they owe.
  4. It then matches the people who owe with the people who are owed, giving a short list of transfers.

A worked example

Ana, Ben and Cleo split a day. Ana pays a 90.00 dinner shared by all three, Ben pays a 24.00 taxi shared by Ana and Ben, and Cleo pays 60.00 of tickets shared by all three. Each dinner and ticket share is 30.00 and 20.00, and the taxi share is 12.00 each for Ana and Ben. Ana paid 90.00 and owes 62.00, so she is owed 28.00. Ben paid 24.00 and owes 62.00, so he owes 38.00. Cleo paid 60.00 and owes 50.00, so she is owed 10.00. The short list is: Ben pays Ana 28.00 and Ben pays Cleo 10.00.

Common questions

How do I split expenses between friends?

List everyone, add each expense with who paid and who shared it, and the calculator divides each one equally between the people who shared it. Adding up what each person paid and what they owe gives one balance per person, and from those it works out who should pay whom.

What happens to the odd cents?

Money is counted in whole cents. If an amount does not divide evenly, the leftover cents go out one at a time, starting with the first person in the list, so the shares always add up to exactly the total.

Is the transfer list the shortest possible?

It is a short list, not a guaranteed minimum. Each step moves money from the person who owes the most to the person owed the most, which keeps the number of transfers low, and never more than one fewer than the number of people.

Does it save or send my data?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and is gone when you close or reload the page. Use Copy the result if you want to keep it.

What does this calculator not do?

It splits equally between the people you choose, in a single currency. If you spend in several currencies, use cash and cards, want unequal shares, or want to record as you go with a sentence, your voice or a receipt photo, a trip app such as Trip Split is built for that.

When you need more than a calculator

This page is for a quick sum. On a real trip, people spend in different currencies, pay by cash and card, and forget what they paid by the evening. Trip Split is made for that: each person records what they paid on their own phone, by typing a sentence, saying it or photographing a receipt, it works offline, and at the end you get the short list of transfers.
