Trip Split

Guides

How to split an Airbnb or rental fairly when people stay different nights

Give each person a share equal to the number of nights they stayed, then divide the total in those proportions. Someone who stayed three nights pays three times what someone who stayed one night pays. Agree on how to treat fixed fees such as cleaning before the trip, and record each payment separately.

Why equal shares go wrong

A rental booked for a long weekend usually does not have the same people the whole time. Two friends arrive on Friday and leave on Monday, a third joins for the Saturday and Sunday nights, a fourth just for Saturday. Splitting the total equally four ways asks the person who stayed one night to pay as much as the ones who stayed three. Weighting by nights fixes that with a rule everyone can check.

The method

  1. Count the nights each person stayed.
  2. Use that number as their share.
  3. Divide the total in proportion: each person pays the total × their nights ÷ the sum of everyone’s nights.
  4. Whoever booked and paid is repaid by the others through the final transfers.

A worked example, including the odd cents

Four friends rent a place for three nights for a total of 1,000.00. Ana and Ben stay all three nights, Cleo stays two and Dan stays one. The shares are 3, 3, 2 and 1, nine in all.

In cents, the total is 100,000. Ana and Ben each get 100,000 × 3 ÷ 9 = 33,333.3, rounded down to 33,333. Cleo gets 100,000 × 2 ÷ 9 = 22,222.2, rounded down to 22,222. Dan gets 100,000 × 1 ÷ 9 = 11,111.1, rounded down to 11,111.

Those add up to 99,999, so one cent is left over. It goes to the first person in the list, so Ana pays 333.34, Ben 333.33, Cleo 222.22 and Dan 111.11. Together that is exactly 1,000.00.

If Ana booked and paid the full 1,000.00, the others owe her their shares: Ben 333.33, Cleo 222.22 and Dan 111.11. Ana’s own share stays with her.

Fixed fees, deposits and extras

How Trip Split does this

Record the booking as one expense, choose “shares” and enter the number of nights for each person. Everything is calculated in whole cents and leftover cents go out in a fixed order, so the shares always add up to the total. If the booking is in another currency, it is converted once and then split; see how to split trip costs in different currencies.

Common questions

Should the cleaning fee also be split by nights?

That is a choice for the group. A fee that is paid once however many people come can be split equally between everyone who stayed, while the nightly rate is split by nights. If you want it simple, split the whole total by nights and say so up front.

What if someone paid the deposit and someone else paid the balance?

Record each payment as its own expense with the person who paid it. The split is the same for both, and the balances add up correctly.

Do people who stayed the whole time pay more than those who came for one night?

Yes, in proportion. Someone who stayed three nights pays three times what someone who stayed one night pays.

Is splitting by nights always the fairest way?

Not always. If people sleep in rooms of very different quality, you may want to weigh the rooms as well. Agree the rule before the trip, then use shares to carry it out.
