Hotel and Airbnb split calculator
Enter the price of the stay, how many nights each person stayed and who paid. Each person’s share is the price in proportion to their nights, and fixed fees such as cleaning can be shared equally or by nights. It is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing leaves your browser.
1. What did the stay cost?
2. How many nights did each person stay?
3. What each person owes
Stay total: 1,000.00 USD
| Person | Nights | Price share | Fees share | Owes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ana | 3 | 300.00 | 25.00 | 325.00 |
| Ben | 3 | 300.00 | 25.00 | 325.00 |
| Cleo | 2 | 200.00 | 25.00 | 225.00 |
| Dan | 1 | 100.00 | 25.00 | 125.00 |
Who pays whom
- Ben pays Ana 325.00 USD
- Cleo pays Ana 225.00 USD
- Dan pays Ana 125.00 USD
How it works
- Each person’s share is the number of nights they stayed.
- The price is divided in proportion to those shares.
- Fixed fees, such as cleaning, are shared equally between everyone who stayed, or by nights.
- Everyone’s total is what they owe the person who paid.
A worked example
Four friends rent a place for three nights. The rental is 900.00 and the cleaning fee is 100.00. Ana and Ben stay all three nights, Cleo stays two and Dan stays one, so the shares are 3, 3, 2 and 1. Ana pays the whole 1,000.00.
The 900.00 is divided by 9 shares of 100.00 each: Ana 300.00, Ben 300.00, Cleo 200.00 and Dan 100.00. The 100.00 cleaning fee is shared equally between the four who stayed, 25.00 each. So Ana owes 325.00, Ben 325.00, Cleo 225.00 and Dan 125.00. Ben, Cleo and Dan send Ana 325.00, 225.00 and 125.00.
If a price does not divide evenly, the cents are handled for you. Without fees, a 1,000.00 stay with the same nights comes to 333.34, 333.33, 222.22 and 111.11, which add up to exactly 1,000.00.
Common questions
How do I split a hotel or Airbnb when people stay different nights?
Give each person a share equal to the number of nights they stayed, then divide the price in those proportions. Someone who stayed three nights pays three times what someone who stayed one night pays.
Should the cleaning fee be split by nights too?
It is up to the group. A fee that is charged once however many people come is often split equally between everyone who stayed. If you prefer to keep it simple, split it by nights like the price. This calculator does either.
What if people sleep in rooms of very different quality?
Nights alone will not reflect that. Agree a rule first, for example paying more for the master room, and then enter the price of each room separately.
What about a deposit paid by one person and the balance by another?
Work out the whole stay here using the total, then settle who owes whom for the total. Whoever paid in parts is repaid through the final transfers.
How are the odd cents handled?
Money is counted in whole cents. If an amount does not divide evenly, the leftover cents go out one at a time, starting with the first person, so the shares always add up to the exact total.
Does this save or send my data?
No. Everything is worked out in your browser and is gone when you close or reload the page.
On a trip, record it when you book
A booking is easiest to settle when it is recorded the moment it is paid, while everyone remembers who is staying when. In Trip Split you can type or say “Hotel 900 EUR, I paid”, choose “shares” and enter each person’s nights. It works offline, and the stay is added to everything else on the trip, so there is one short list of transfers at the end. See the sample trip, the guide on splitting an Airbnb by nights stayed, or the split expenses calculator for other costs.
