Trip Split

Gas cost calculator for a trip

Enter the distance, your car’s fuel consumption and the fuel price, in whichever units you use, and the calculator gives the fuel cost for the trip and what each person in the car should pay. It is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing leaves your browser.

1. The trip and the car

2. Who shares it?

3. What it costs

The trip uses about 33.8 litres of fuel, which costs 62.44 EUR, plus 20.00 EUR of other costs.

Total: 82.44 EUR

Each of 4 people pays 20.61 EUR

How it works

  1. The distance and the car’s consumption give the amount of fuel the trip uses. Miles, kilometres, litres and US and UK gallons are converted exactly.
  2. The fuel is priced at the price you enter for one litre or one gallon.
  3. Tolls, parking and other costs are added if you enter them.
  4. The total is divided equally between the people who share it, with the driver left out if you choose.

Worked examples

In kilometres and litres. 450 km at 7.5 litres per 100 km uses 33.8 litres. At 1.85 per litre that is 62.44. Add 20.00 of tolls and the total is 82.44, so each of four people pays 20.61.

In miles and US gallons. 300 miles at 30 miles per gallon uses 10 gallons. At 3.50 per gallon that is 35.00, so each of four people pays 8.75.

Common questions

How do I work out the gas cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by how far the car goes on one unit of fuel, then multiply by the price of that unit. In litres per 100 km, that is distance × consumption ÷ 100 litres, times the price per litre. The calculator does the conversion between km and miles, and between litres, US gallons and UK gallons.

Should the driver pay a share of the fuel?

That is for the group to decide. Many groups split fuel equally between everyone in the car; others let the driver ride free as a thank-you. Tick the box to leave the driver out of the shares.

What is the difference between a US gallon and a UK gallon?

A US gallon is about 3.785 litres and a UK gallon is about 4.546 litres, so miles per gallon figures are not the same in the two countries. Pick the one your car’s figure is quoted in.

Where do I find my car’s fuel consumption?

Look in the car’s manual or trip computer. A real-life average from your last few tanks is more accurate than the official figure, especially with a full car and luggage.

Does the calculator include tolls and parking?

There is a box for tolls, parking and other costs that the same people share. They are added to the fuel and split the same way.

Does this save or send my data?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and is gone when you close or reload the page.

On the road, record each fill-up

The calculator gives a budget before you go. On the trip itself, each fill-up is paid by whoever happens to be at the pump, and it is easy to lose track. In Trip Split you can type or say “Fuel 62 EUR, I paid”, confirm the card, and choose who shares it. It works offline, which helps where the signal is weak, and the fuel adds up with the tolls, food and everything else into one short list of transfers at the end. See the guide on splitting fuel, tolls and the rental car, the sample trip, or the split expenses calculator.
